Check your sheaves before the new rope goes on. A set for each rope size, from CA$7.50.
Worn sheaves are responsible for 90%+ of the problems we deal with. Check your sheaves with these groove gauges before installing the new rope.
Stainless steel gauges from each rope's nominal diameter up to nominal +10%. CA$7.50 (US$5.36) a gauge.
Tell us the standard you inspect to in your quote list: it sets the minimum groove size we mark on the gauges. It does not change the price.
Order sheave gauges
Add what you need to your quote list and send it. For a 10 mm set or a single gauge, enter the sizes in the box that opens. For a crane set, use the button on your crane's page, or add one here and tell us the crane.
Or email us the sizes and how many.
Gauge details
Measure the actual size of a sheave groove, not just pass or fail. Our stainless steel sheave gauges come in 0.25 mm steps up to 150 mm, so you can see exactly how much groove life is left and plan the sheave change before it stops the crane.
| Material | Stainless steel, sizes etched on every gauge |
| Size range | Up to 150 mm |
| Increment | 0.25 mm |
| Sold as | Sets covering 10 mm, for example 20 mm to 30 mm: 20, 20.25, 20.5, 20.75, 21 mm and so on |
| Crane sets | A set made for the rope sizes on your crane, every winch included |
| Single gauges | Available in any size in the range |
| Custom gauges | Made for a specific machine and standard, for example the ASME B30.30 or CSA Z150 minimum groove for a Liebherr LR 1300 W1 rope |

Why not a go/no-go gauge?
A go/no-go gauge only tells you whether a sheave passes today. A sheave can pass for five months and fail in month six, and the crane stops while someone looks for a spare.
A gauge in 0.25 mm steps tells you the real groove size. Compare it with your rope’s measured diameter and the minimum groove in your standard or crane manual, and you know how much life is left. Then you can order sheaves months ahead and change them while the crane is in the yard.
Worn sheaves are the number one cause of the rope problems we see. Read why.
A free go/no-go gauge with every rope quote. We cut one to the minimum groove size for your rope and the standard you inspect to, and mail it to you. Buy the rope from us or not, it’s yours. When you want to see how much groove life is left, not just pass or fail, add a gauge set. Canada and USA.
Gauge sets for your crane
Every crane page on this site lists the rope diameters on that machine, with a gauge set for each one: every 0.25 mm step from the rope’s nominal diameter up to nominal +10%. For a 34 mm rope that is 34.00 mm to 37.50 mm, 15 gauges, CA$112.50 (US$80.36). Find your crane and add its gauge sets to your quote list, or tell us the crane and we will put the sets together.
Custom gauges for your crane
Tell us the crane, the winch and the standard you inspect to (for example ASME B30.30 or CSA Z150). We’ll make a gauge for that machine’s minimum groove size, so your inspector can check it in seconds.
