Wire rope inspection and discard standards for cranes

Five standards, each split the same way: scope, inspection frequency, inspection criteria and removal criteria. Plain English, with the clause number for every point.

ISO 4309:2017Cranes and hoists: mobile, tower, overhead, offshore, deck, floating and more
  • Daily visual check of the rope expected to work that day (5.2).
  • Periodic inspection by a competent person, who sets the interval (5.3.2).
  • Idle over three months: full periodic inspection before work (5.5).
Scope, frequency, inspection and removal criteria
CSA Z150:26Mobile cranes in Canada
  • Rope watched during work every working day (5.5.2.1).
  • Periodic interval set by the rope maker or a competent person (5.5.3.1).
  • Whole rope inspected end to end once a year (5.5.3.3).
Scope, frequency, inspection and removal criteria
CSA Z248:17Tower cranes in Canada
  • Daily visual check by a designated person (6.5.1.2.1).
  • Monthly check of all running ropes (6.4.6 a)).
  • Annual inspection of fixed and running ropes (6.4.7).
Scope, frequency, inspection and removal criteria
ASME B30.30-2023Rope on equipment covered by the ASME B30 volumes
  • Daily visual check of running rope in service (30-1.8.1(b)(1)).
  • Periodic interval by rope use and service class, with default maximums (30-1.8.1(c)(2)).
  • Idle over six months: full periodic inspection (30-1.8.3(b)).
Scope, frequency, inspection and removal criteria
API RP 2DOffshore pedestal-mounted cranes
  • Inspections set by crane usage category: pre-use, monthly, quarterly, annual (5.1.2).
  • Annual inspection on every crane by a qualified inspector (5.1.3.6.1).
  • Inspection reports should be kept for four years (5.2.2).
Scope, frequency, inspection and removal criteria
How findings are combined. ISO 4309 Annex G adds findings at the same position together, and the calculator does the same for CSA Z150 and CSA Z248, which themselves remove a rope at any one criterion. ASME B30.30 and API RP 2D use the worst single finding. Try the discard calculator.

These pages summarise each standard in our own words for general information. They are not copies of the standards and do not replace them.

All specifications must be verified before purchase and before installation. Rope specifications can change between machines of the same model and between model years. Confirm against your machine's logbook, reeving and the manufacturer's documentation before ordering. Inspection and discard decisions remain those of your competent person.
